Teeth whiteningin Paris 8, in the heart of the Triangle d’Or

Teeth whitening — often called “bleaching” — restores the natural shade of the teeth using a peroxide-based gel, applied under the supervision of a dental surgeon. At Dr Laura Zeitoun Saal’s practice on avenue George V, it is carried out bespoke and safely, after diagnosis.

What is teeth whitening?

Whitening lightens the shade of the natural teeth using a peroxide-based gel, without removing any tooth structure.

The gel releases oxygen that penetrates the enamel and dentine and breaks down the pigments responsible for yellowing. Unlike “whitening” toothpastes, which act on the surface through abrasion, whitening works deep within the shade of the tooth. Carried out under a dental surgeon’s supervision, it does not damage the enamel: it is the concentration of the gel, the condition of the teeth and the follow-up that make the difference between a safe procedure and a poorly controlled over-the-counter product.

“Whitening” or “bleaching”?

It is the same treatment. Dental surgeons speak of “whitening” because the aim is to reveal the natural shade of the tooth, not to make it artificially white.

The distinction also has a regulatory meaning. Effective gels, dosed between 0.1% and 6% hydrogen peroxide, are reserved for dental surgeons and their supervision. Kits sold online or treatments in beauty salons are limited to very low concentrations (≤ 0.1%), of little effectiveness, and without any prior diagnosis. [regulatory framework to be validated by the Dr / an official source before publication.]

Indications & limits

Whitening gives its best results on natural teeth that have yellowed or dulled. It also has limits that it is only honest to know before starting.

  • Teeth yellowed by age or by coffee, tea or tobacco (so-called extrinsic staining).
  • A dull natural shade that one wishes to lighten by a few tones.
  • Before a cosmetic project (veneers, composites) to define the reference shade.

Whitening does not change the colour of crowns, veneers, composites or ceramics: these keep their shade and may then need to be replaced to remain harmonious. It is less effective on grey discolouration or that linked to tetracyclines, and some white spots may temporarily become more visible. It is advised against during pregnancy and breastfeeding as a precaution. Dr Saal checks the indication at the first appointment. [age conditions / contraindications to be confirmed by the Dr.]

In-chair or take-home?

Two protocols exist, often combined: a session at the practice to initiate the result, then take-home trays to refine and maintain it.

The choice depends on your starting shade, your sensitivity and your lifestyle. It is decided with Dr Saal after the diagnosis.

The treatment, step by step

Whitening follows a simple sequence, always preceded by an examination.

01

Diagnosis & starting shade

Examination of the teeth and gums, detection of any caries or sensitivities, recording of the initial shade and reference photographs.

02

Impressions & bespoke trays

Fabrication of trays fitted to your arches, for an even application of the gel and protection of the gums.

03

Whitening protocol

In-chair session and/or wearing the take-home trays according to the agreed protocol, with a concentration tailored to your sensitivity.

04

Check-up & maintenance

Verification of the result, dietary and hygiene advice, and a touch-up plan to make the shade last.

Results & sensitivity

Whitening lightens the shade by a few tones, gradually. The result depends on the starting colour and the origin of the discolouration; it varies from one person to another.

A passing sensitivity to hot and cold is common during the protocol: it is managed by adjusting the concentration and the pace, and with the help of desensitising gels. It disappears after the treatment. The teeth then continue to change according to habits (coffee, tea, tobacco), hence the value of touch-ups.

In accordance with our professional code of conduct, these photographs do not represent a guaranteed result: results vary according to each clinical situation.

Duration & maintenance

Whitening generally lasts from 1 to 3 years, depending on hygiene and consumption habits.

Coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco gradually re-stain the teeth. To prolong the result: limit these sources of discolouration, brush carefully, and carry out occasional touch-ups with your trays. Dr Saal decides with you the appropriate maintenance schedule.

Frequently asked questions

Does whitening damage the teeth?
No, when it is carried out under the supervision of a dental surgeon, with an appropriate concentration and after diagnosis. A passing sensitivity may occur, then disappears.
Is it painful?
The treatment is not painful. A passing sensitivity to hot and cold is possible during the protocol; it is managed by adjusting the gel and the pace.
How long does the result last?
Generally 1 to 3 years, depending on hygiene and the consumption of coffee, tea, wine or tobacco. Touch-ups with your trays prolong the result.
Why not an online kit or a beauty salon?
Effective products (0.1 to 6% peroxide) are reserved for dental surgeons. Outside a practice, concentrations are very low, without diagnosis or protection of the gums.
Will my crowns or veneers whiten?
No. Crowns, veneers and composites keep their shade. They may then need to be replaced to remain harmonious with the whitened teeth.
Should teeth be whitened before fitting veneers?
Often, yes. Whitening sets the reference shade before the colour of the veneers is chosen. One generally waits two weeks before bonding.
